Teaching a language has always included teaching culture. Language classes included a significant amount of instruction on historical information, national symbols, and the most significant geographical elements of the target country.
The term “culture”, which is difficult to define, refers to much more than merely the sum of a country’s greatest historical accomplishments. It has frequently been compared to an iceberg, with some sections visible on the surface such artefacts, customs, literature, folklore, clothes, food, and leisure, and some invisible parts like thoughts, values, and beliefs that can only be guessed at, suspected, or intuitively felt. The illustration of the iceberg makes it abundantly evident that culture is made up of many smaller parts that together make up a much larger whole.
